Conservation in the Hackney Area

Over recent years Hackney's built environment has come under a great deal of pressure for redevelopment. This has resulted from the City's increasing need for office space, and city workers searching for convenient accommodation. Whilst there has been some positive regeneration in the borough, some areas require additional protection from inappropriate redevelopment.

These areas may have a particular character, or architectural qualities which should be preserved or enhanced for the future. This section looks at some of the ways that certain areas of Hackney are protected from development, the local people who advise the council on planning applications in their area, and some of the other work being carried out in the borough to identify particular areas that merit protection.
