In 2001 both The Hackney Society and Shoreditch Our Way felt that there was a lack of coherent planning information and policy available for the Shoreditch area because of the high level of development taking place in the south of the borough. With new national policy on UDPs being issued it was an ideal time to begin work on gathering together historical and planning information. The Shoreditch Heritage Study was developed out of this gap in knowledge, and became a project under 'Action for Hackney Heritage' funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Shoreditch Our Way and the Hackney Society.
The aim of the study is to draw together much existing information regarding listed buildings, conservation areas and archaeology, and enhance the record by carrying out additional photographic, architectural, historical and mapping exercises. Once completed, it will form a record of the development of the area, how changes in patterns of use have effected the built environment, and which are the areas of historic significance.
