Come for a walk around Hackney Central and discover the secrets of the ancient parish of Hackney. Hear the stories behind buildings like the Hackney Empire, St Augustine’s Tower, St John-at-Hackney Church and Sutton House; and find out about the poor and the great-and-the-good who lived and worked in Hackney (with some buried in the churchyard). Sheep drovers, Charlie Chaplin, Dudley Ryder, William Booth, Francis Beaufort, spies, the Admiral who hired Darwin, immigrants, Austrian aristocracy, the insane, and tales of rags-to-riches and riches-to-rags, plus much more.

On the walk

You will need to wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes. If it looks like rain bring a waterproof jacket. Also bring water, food and any medication you might need. Before the start of the walk you will need to fill out a Health Questionnaire. If you have any health concerns it is recommended that you check with your GP before joining. Pedometers will be provided.
