The Board of Trustees of the Hackney Society cordially invites you to the Society’s Annual General Meeting to take place online (Zoom software required) on

Wednesday 16th September 2020

A prompt 7pm start for the Virtual Tour, followed at 8pm by the AGM including Election of Trustees. Attendees are welcome to connect from 6:45 onwards to ensure they can hear and see the video presentations ahead of the 7pm start.

Alexander Baron’s Hackney (7pm)

This is a brand new virtual tour by Rachel Kolsky, a prize-winning Blue Badge Guide whose enthusiasm for people and places shines through each walk she devises and delivers.

Rachel says

“Iain Sinclair declared Hackney undefinable but he also said that if anything could define it then it would be The Lowlife by Alexander Baron. This novel takes you from post WWII Hackney and Dalston to the East End … following in the footsteps of Harry ‘Boy' Boas … and in the footsteps of the author himself. He grew up on the border of Dalston and Stoke Newington, his grandparents lived off Brick Lane and his last home was in Temple Fortune, north-west London.”

You are invited to explore Hackney “discovering the sites Baron would have known - home, school, public baths, cinemas and workshops - and how they inspired his London novels.”

You MUST confirm your attendance by Monday 14th September 2020 by registering with Zoom using the link below:

Important information for Members participating in the AGM

Given the online format of the formal AGM, interaction with members is constrained by the technology. Whilst we intend to take questions and votes via Zoom, the technology may elude you or us at the time. Therefore, we strongly encourage members to read the previous minutes, Annual Report and Finance Report above and raise any questions by email BEFORE the meeting. If you see fit, you may appoint the Chair of the meeting as your proxy to vote on your behalf. If you do so and wish to object to any matter of business, please make it clear in your email to us otherwise we will assume you support all motions and Trustee nominations approved by the current Trustees.

For any questions or to appoint a proxy, please email info@hackneysociety.org before the event.
