Pressure on the built environment

The need for conservation

Over recent years Hackney's built environment has come under a great deal of pressure for redevelopment. This has resulted from the City's increasing need for office space, and city workers searching for convenient accommodation.

Whilst there has been some positive regeneration in the borough, some areas require additional protection from inappropriate redevelopment. These areas may have a particular character, or architectural qualities which should be preserved or enhanced for the future.

What exactly is the position of the Hackney Society regarding Conservation Areas? When a site in such an area becomes available, do you advocate pastiche or something more honest – in form and material - to the period in which it is built?
