The German Hospital is little known today in Hackney. It lies concealed behind high walls in the heart of Dalston. Glimpses may be had of it from the North London Line railway, suggesting a large country mansion surrounded by wooded grounds.

Its fine 1930s extension faces on to Fassett Square. 'The German', as it was called, was of considerable importance, both architecturally and socially. It was once a leading international hospital and it occupied a central place in the community it served.

This report attempts to show how this unique institution came into being in Hackney and to explain the mystery behind the high walls and to give the building the wider attention it deserves.
