Anna Newman
Anna grew up in Hackney Wick and her family has a long association with the area going back to the 19th century. Anna has always been interested in history and studied it at university. She loves discovering the many layers of Hackney’s history and the people that lived here and walked where we walk. There is so much that we take for granted today that was determinedly fought for by forgotten local people. Anna hopes to make your walk very engaging and fun, and leave you with people and things you want to find out more about.
Sue McCarthy
Sue is a Londoner born and bred who loves exploring lesser-known parts of London and sharing their hidden histories. Her walks usually have a social history or literary focus and she has a particular interest in the stories of London’s women. After an eclectic career in adult and community education and charities, Sue trained as a tour guide in 2014. She is delighted and proud to add Hackney to her portfolio along with Camden, Clerkenwell and Islington and Lambeth.
Nina Sprigge
Nina is a skilled storyteller with a passion for bringing London’s social history to life. She likes to focus on personal stories that highlight the diversity of Londoners. She has been an actor and teacher and was School’s Programme Manager at the Museum of London for many years. She was born in London and has been a Hackney resident for over 30 years, where she bought up her two children. She is proud to be one of the first cohort of Hackney Guides and seeks to create tours that are quirky and fun, she can also prepare bespoke itineraries on request.

Andrew Parnell
Andrew is a qualified Hackney and City of London Guide and has been leading walks in East London for over 10 years. He aims to amuse and move his audience as well as to inform them, to share with them his fascination for Hackney, its history, institutions, buildings and, above all, its people – to find clues in the streets to their lives down the ages. Andrew won the prize for Best Practical in his City of London guiding examinations. A retired lawyer, he was once described as “that rarity, a lawyer with a sense of humour!”

Julia Kuznecow
Julia is a member of the first cohort of official Hackney Guides. She is also a qualified City of London Guide and a member of the City of London Guide Lecturers’ Association since 2013. Julia offers guided walking tours in Hackney, the City and the East End, with a particular interest in who and what settled on the peripheries of the City and why. She specialises in small-group, bespoke tours, linked to Huguenot history and links between the City and the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
Terry Pipe
As a qualified Hackney and City of London Guide, Terry can show you the unusual and quirky aspects of the places that you thought you knew well. There is much interesting history in the streets where we live and he will bring it to life in an informative and entertaining way as he takes you around town.
Sue Doe
A Hackney native, Sue is Course Director of the Hackney Guiding Course. Qualified in the City of London in 2008 and now proud possessor of the Hackney badge. Sue is the coauthor and editor of the Women from Hackney’s books and specialises in women’s history. Every one of her walks can be guaranteed to include interesting women. Working with the Hackney Society to install plaques to recognise women’s contribution to its history.
