Who we are

Janet Chapman

Chair

Janet has lived in Hackney for 40 years and has a background in education and international development. She is also the founder of Hackney History Festival.


Gordon Shrigley

Vice Chair

Gordon Shrigley has worked as a local architect for 25 years and is keen to promote good design and its appreciation in the Borough. He also taught an MA architecture design studio at Westminster University for several years and has published a number of books and articles on the theory and practice of architecture.

As a former historic environment record manager, son of an architect, and a Hackney resident since 2015, I’m all about helping the Society to celebrate the borough’s past as well as good contemporary design.

Abigail Winslow

Abigail is a published historian and preventive conservator for the National Trust, who has worked at several Hackney based heritage sites. She is also on the planning committee for Hackney History Festival.


Ewa Effiom

Ewa has lived in Hackney ever since moving to London. He believes that as he has benefitted so much from the urban design principles that have shaped its development it’s his duty so give back and help form its future so jumped at the opportunity to join the Hackney Society.


Femi Adekoya

Trustee
Femi is a barrister living in Hackney. He is passionate about preserving Hackney’s rich architectural and cultural heritage while ensuring that development remains inclusive and community-focused.


Julia Lafferty

Trustee

Julia has extensive experience of campaigning on heritage issues dating back to the 1980s when she was a founder member of the successful Save Sutton House Campaign. In addition to leading guided walks and contributing to Hackney Society publications, she sits on the Buildings at Risk group and serves on the Clapton Conservation Areas Advisory Committee.


Yang Yang (Ya Ya) Chen

Trustee

Ya Ya is an architect based in Hackney, co-leading the practice RC/YYC and the Part 0 Access and Outreach programme at the London School of Architecture. She has extensive experience working with young people and delivering community-focused architectural projects. Her work centres on empowering young people to advocate for a better built environment and to play an active role in shaping the neighbourhoods they live in.
